How I went from guessing to knowing – my tracking setup for affiliate campaigns (full breakdown)

Hey everyone,

I've been doing affiliate marketing for about 6 years now and the single biggest upgrade in my results came not from finding a better traffic source or a higher-paying offer — it came from finally setting up proper tracking.

For the first two years I was basically flying blind. I knew roughly how many clicks I was sending, and I could see conversions in my affiliate network dashboard, but I had zero idea which traffic source, which ad creative, which landing page variant, or which GEO was actually responsible for the money coming in.

Here's the setup I use today (and have been refining for the past 3 years):

1. Tracking tool – I use a self-hosted tracker (Binom, but Voluum or ThriveTracker work equally well). The key is that every single click goes through the tracker BEFORE hitting the offer. No exceptions.

2. UTM parameters + SubIDs – Every traffic source gets its own campaign ID, and I pass SubIDs down to the network level so I can see conversion data back in my tracker. Most networks support postback URLs — if yours doesn't, that's a red flag.

3. Split testing landing pages — I never run a single LP. Minimum 2 variants at launch, and I let the tracker decide the winner after 200+ conversions per variant. Don't kill a test early, that's how you leave money on the table.

4. Weekly ROI review — Every Monday I pull a report: spend vs. revenue by traffic source, by GEO, by offer. Anything below 80% ROI gets paused or rotated. Anything above 150% gets scaled that same day.

5. Separate campaigns for each GEO — Don't mix GEOs in one campaign. Your CPCs, CTRs and conversion rates will be so different that you'll never know what's actually working.

The result? In the first month after implementing this I cut my wasted ad spend by 34% and increased overall ROI by 60% — same offers, same traffic sources, just better visibility.

Happy to answer questions or go deeper on any part of this. Also curious what tracking setups others here are running — drop your stack below.
